Our Next Talk

Rolf is based in Auckland, New Zealand, and has been interested in astronomy for as long as he can remember, having observed and photographed the night sky for decades with many different instruments. He enjoys taking images that are unusual, such as ultra-deep exposures, gravitational lenses, quasars, distant galaxy clusters, extragalactic globulars, and even the Cosmic Web itself. Rolf finds that these obscure targets often have a very interesting story to tell.

His interest has led to some novel achievements in amateur astronomy, including imaging the circumstellar disc of Beta Pictoris, the first optical detection of the Southern jet in Centaurus A, light echoes from both SN1987A and the Great Eta Carinae Eruption, and he has also received numerous competition awards and APOD’s (Astronomy Picture of the Day).
